What a PMHNP is

A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a registered nurse who has completed graduate education in psychiatric care and is nationally board certified to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions across the lifespan.

A PMHNP begins as a nurse. That foundation comes from the helping profession. Nurses are educated to see the whole person, including physical health, daily life, family, and social context. A PMHNP builds on that nursing base with advanced training in psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, psychotherapy, and prescribing. The result is a provider who is both a nurse and a psychiatric clinician.

This is the main difference from a psychiatrist. A psychiatrist completes medical school and a psychiatry residency, following a physician pathway from the start. A PMHNP follows a nursing pathway first, then adds specialized psychiatric training. Both can diagnose and prescribe. The difference is the starting point and the model of care that remains.

PMHNPs provide primary mental health care. In the words of the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, PMH advanced practice nurses are primary mental health care providers. They deliver continuous, comprehensive services that include assessment, diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and health promotion. Many patients see a PMHNP for depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, trauma, and other common conditions, often receiving both medication management and therapy from the same provider.

The nursing model stays present in practice. Care is person-centered and often includes the family. Treatment plans typically consider biological, psychological, and social factors together rather than focusing only on symptoms or medication. The therapeutic relationship is central, and education and support for daily functioning are part of the work.

In many states a PMHNP practices independently. Appointments are often easier to obtain than with a psychiatrist, which helps expand access to psychiatric care.
